Gilmer ISD Approves New Drop-Off and Pick-Up Lane for Gilmer Elementary

The Gilmer ISD School Board approved the construction of a new drop-off and pick-up lane for Gilmer Elementary School during its meeting on Monday. The project is designed to improve traffic flow and enhance safety of our students and parents. The entry point for this road will be approximately 1,800 feet north of the main entrance on Highway 271 North, near the white barn.

This will be a single-lane road used exclusively for morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. A map is attached showing the designated entry and exit routes for vehicles delivering or picking up students at the beginning and end of the school day.

From 8:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., access to Gilmer Elementary will continue to be through the Main Drive only. During this time, vehicles may enter at the main entrance, and a guard will grant permission to enter the parking area. The elementary exit will continue to be through the Main Drive.

Once this new road is completed, the practice of picking up or delivering students by walking up to the school will be discontinued. Intermediate traffic patterns will remain unchanged, and buses will continue to enter and exit through the Gilmer Intermediate Drive.

I would like to thank the Gilmer ISD School Board for its financial efficiency, which has allowed the district to use available cash to fund this project. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-January, and we hope to have the new road open as soon as possible thereafter. We will work with local law enforcement agencies to ensure stopping or waiting along Highway 271 North is eliminated.
