College Credit

Explore the possibilities for earning college credit while still in high school.

Parents:

Since Gilmer has a Tech Prep Program, with an agreement of articulated credit at some of the local community colleges, entering a Tech Prep agreement as a freshman is a great way to jump-start your child's college and save money at the same time.  Learn about the course options your child has at Gilmer High School for starting his/her career path as a freshman!  Agreements with the local community colleges means the college agrees to give your child credit for the tech prep course of study he/she took in high school if he/she continues in that field of study.  Your child knows in advance what programs each college approves and which that college offers.

In our course guide, we illustrate several 4 year plans within our Tech prep program.  Some area community colleges offer samples of a 6 year plan, which includes what your child would take the entire time in college.

Advanced Placement courses offers more rigorous course work in core classes  (English, Science, Math, and Social Studies).  At the end of the year, the college board offers exams for these courses.  Each college has its own criteria for what exam score is equivalent to college course credit.  All students are encouraged to enroll in AP classes.  Each exam cost $83, but fee deductions are available under certain conditions.  Accommodations are also available for students with special needs.
